LULAC COMMENDS SEATTLE POLICE CHIEF'S COURAGEOUS DEFENSE OF CIVIL LIBERTIES
Nation's Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Stands With Chief Shon Barnes for Upholding the Constitution and Protecting Lawful Protest Rights
SEATTLE, WA — The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) strongly supports Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes following his public declaration to uphold the First Amendment rights of Seattle residents, even under pressure from federal authorities to do otherwise. Chief Barnes' principled stance—refusing to carry out any unconstitutional federal order to silence peaceful protest—is a testament to courageous leadership and commitment to democratic values.
"Chief Barnes' statement is more than a line in the sand; it's a call to conscience for law enforcement nationwide," said Roman Palomares, LULAC National President and Chairman of the Board. "When a police chief says he's willing to go to jail rather than violate the Constitution, he reminds us that justice must never be sacrificed for politics. LULAC proudly stands with him."
LULAC recognizes Chief Barnes' decision as an embodiment of community-first policing, where accountability, humanity, and the law intersect. His leadership sends a vital message across the country at a time when militarized responses to peaceful demonstrations are escalating.
"When a law enforcement leader like Chief Barnes is willing to risk his freedom to protect our constitutional rights, that's not just bravery, it's patriotism," says Euler Torres, LULAC Vice-President for the Northwest. "We need more leaders who stand with the people, not against them. This is what the WE THE PEOPLE Movement is about: reminding this country that justice begins at the local level, and courage is contagious," he adds.
LULAC Washington State joins in this support and calls on other public officials and law enforcement leaders across the U.S. to stand against unconstitutional mandates and protect the communities they serve.
"Chief Barnes exemplifies integrity and moral clarity at a moment when both are desperately needed," said Gabriel Portugal, LULAC Washington State Director. "His refusal to abandon constitutional protections gives hope to immigrant and working-class families living in fear of unjust raids and crackdowns. LULAC strongly supports him and urges others to do the same."
LULAC urges all protest participants to demonstrate peacefully and safely and encourages communities to utilize available legal protection and advocacy resources. As our nation faces difficult questions about the limits of power and the role of law enforcement, the example set by Chief Barnes should be commended and amplified.
